[CoLoCo] CLI or script access to GNOME resources?

Hey, I think that was actually the answer to the question. Now, a new question: Assume
that I know several programming or scripting languages, but nothing about GTK and only a
very little about Python. Where would I start? Is there a book worth buying or a
website with an awesome introduction?
More questions: Can I make my programs run from crontab if they're non-interactive?
Can I use standard I/O (stdin,stdout,stderr)?
