Andrew,
The how to I'm doing will work for you if your hardware is compatible.
For best result, boot one of the school computers using a live CD,
plug in the external drive and install Ubuntu on it following the how
to. When you are done you will have Ubuntu installed on an external
drive that can be plugged into any compatible computer and booted. You
may need to tweak grub.
One thing I don't know is how well it will work on computers that are
different from the one it was connected to during install. I don't
know if it will run well on a system with vastly different hardware.
Another thing to check - or does anyone have this experience?
