I've had pretty good luck
rolling my own. The biggest problem has been power supplies, which are usually
supplied with the box so they get skimped on unless you step it up and get a
box from one of the better know houses. It may not be the cheapest way to go,
but if you put in some diligence you end up with a better product [and not
really expensive].

I'm with Mitch here. Maybe I've had a bad luck streak but the systems I've
built myself have never held up as long as something put together by the
manufacturer. Also, every system I've ever built ended up with a noise problem
in short order. Anecdotal, sure, but its been my experience.

You're going to end up upgrading the graphics card
before the CPU... so if that's the case (the CPU in relation to those near it)
then stick with what you're at.  The 8600 is a nice card and should last a
good two years.  By then there will be the 9000 series and it'll be an
easy upgrade.

IF he is going to run windows vista, get 4 GIGs ram.  If XP, Consider
moving up to 3 (XP Doesn't support any more).

Really?
Too high? I know the GPU is the main issue but a low end CPU

won't help matters will it? That one was only $180 and is one step

below the top core 2 (as far as I understand their various models) not

counting extreme models.

The GPU is rather middle of the road. Any thoughts on it?
