[CoLoCo] good distro for umpc

I am checking out one of the hp mini notes as a possible option for a mobile
lab for our school. They come with SLED but I'm not a fan of RPM distros or
Suse. I put Ubuntu on this but it's kind of slow and buggy (video, sound
issues). I know Ubuntu is probably a bit heavier than some and lighter than
others. I'm not interested in puppy or DSL but is there a fairly full on
distro similar to Ubuntu but lighter weight? I know about Xubuntu and
installed it with apt-get install xubuntu-desktop but the core problems
(sound, video, speed) didn't really change. Maybe that's 'cause it's not a
pure install but running xfce instead of gnome should make some difference
and I didn't really notice any. Anyway, has anyone played with any lighter
Linux and found it to be quite good? I know the mini-note is not quite a
UMPC but isn't there a version of Ubuntu coming out for these? Would that
work or is not ready or not appropriate?
Thanks.
