[CoLoCo] migration away from Win2k3 + AD

Hi,

I just spent _way_ too much time helping a local
school repair their very flaky win2k3 server.  And
then I spent some more time making a failover server
for them.  

Question:
Is there a recommended migration path from a standard
setup with...
   * A win2k3 file server and domain controller
   * a bunch of WinXP machines
to...
   * A Linux server with something active
directory-ish
   * a bunch of Linux machines
   * a few (as little as possible) WinXP machines
   * maybe a Mac or 2
