Well, in terms of practical solutions (possibly), I say "dual boot".
It's a compromise that will allow for both intentional and accidental 
growth.  And will allow those who fear the light to remain in darkness
if they so choose.  That plus a bunch of Windows-based open source apps
along with a few hints that there's more where that came from on the "Dark
Side of the Disk" (cue Pink Floyd)... or is that the "Dork Side of the 
Disk"? ;-)  The Power of the Dork Side.
