I can answer "yes" and "no" on the grounds that even with, say, 10.10 -> 11.04 I have have mixed results.
1. Did you mean Desktop or Server "flavour"?
2. Did you mean 32-bit or 64-bit and which architecture?
3. Did you install a lot of PPAs? Seems if a PPA upgrades a package version to one not maintained by Canonical things can go wrong due to unexpected package versions.
4. Did you use fancy disk configuration options? While this is not a necessarily a mistake my experience is that they do not receive the same level of Q&A as disk configuration options listed as default options.
