[DC LoCo] Kernel question

I always update what update-manager indicates is available. I have done
very little adding of apps or customizing.
It appears that since my upgrade from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS none of the
kernel images that downloaded during updates ever REALLY got installed,
or my grub is confused. I installed, supposedly, 3.2.0-35 this morning,
and I ran "uname -r" - which I had not done in a VERY long time. It
returned 3.2.0-29.
I started synaptic and searched for linux-image. Sure enough I have
several listed. In 10.04 the same thing occured (the listing of multiple
kernels) but the LATEST always booted up with no conflicts.
Any pointers on how to point to the latest linux-image will be
appreciated. The box is booting fine and all apps run OK, except flash
which eats up ALL CPU and drags everything down. I have a laptop with a
much smaller Ubuntu based distro (also 12.04) but their kernels and
flash all work "swimmingly".
Thank you.
Marti
