I hadn't seen the series, but it's common sense -- even if I enjoy
beating Microsoft up.  But really, there's so much to like about FOSS
in general, it's easy to stay positive.  However, though I happen to
like Ubuntu, I do like to let the curious know that there's a whole
slew of OS's, distros and applications, that are waiting to be
explored.

I don't have any real opinion on what's best. Both 1 and 2 are
relatively easy.  Presumably, 2 would leave less clutter on your
system.

It's been a while since I built a custom kernel, but I used to do it
regularly enough that it wasn't too arduous.  I'm betting others are
fresher on it, but I could probably relearn.
