Hey DJ,
If you want to introduce your buddies to open source games, try Tremulous and Planeshift.
Try introducing the RPG players to Planeshift (website planeshift.it) which is a well crafted MMORPG that is similar to WoW, except for the 'membership fee' part. I played for a while, but it was difficult with my slow computer. The world looks incredible, the characters and classes are flexible and diverse, and all around it seems to be very well put together. The only bugs I have encountered have been with AI interaction, but from what I've seen and heard: AI is a tough safe to crack.
As for FPS games, try Tremulous (website tremulous.net) its a combination of FPS and RTS. Actually, I play Tremulous with many of my classmates and we always fight over who gets to play as Humans and Aliens. It's really a nice change of pace to have a game that doesn't have perfectly balanced teams: the aliens are faster and have special abilities like wall walk and regeneration, but only melee attacks; the humans have ranged weapons, armor, and gadgets, but have fewer inborn abilities to aid them. Both sides have a building capabilities to build defenses and spawn points to help them continue to wage war.
While both games are easy to dive into and play right from installation (Tremulous even has its action commands written on side of the HUD!) once you get deeper under the surface you develop a greater understanding of the way they work, keeping them interesting even after months of play.
btw, I prefer FPS games too. If you start playing Tremulous online, look for a servers named "PMHS" and "HERE" if my class happens to be on, we'd love to play!
