changes are a-brewin'

Well, just got an opportunity to breathe for a bit at work, so I decided to
send an update on a few things:

1 - Finally got around to changing my display name on the mailing lists.
I've used the name GoatTuber for the majority of things for the past decade,
so I usually put that as my name for anything non-payment related. However,
for working with the Ubuntu community, I should be using my real name. If my
changes went through correctly, it should be using that now (Dan Allen).

2 - I emailed back and forth with the project manager for GCompris about
some of the games not following their own instructions and worked out some
fixes for them. The codebase is currently frozen, so he said he'll be adding
those changes in the next release.

3 - After doing some beta testing on Edubuntu Gutsy, I saw that my previous
complaint about installing the educational games has been fixed. However,
Compiz is still installed by default, and still required by
edubuntu-desktop. I really don't think that should be included, and hope
that's changed in Hardy.

4 - Huge occupational changes for me. Right now, I'm pretty much the IT hat
rack for a mid-sized e-commerce site. 3 million members, and I'm the tech
department. If it's development, Q/A, database, networking, or tech support
related, I'm your guy. While our CEO comes from a strong IT background
(previously writing transaction systems on Wall Street), he spends his days
running the company now, setting up deals with other companies and such.
Well, one of those deals just materialized the other day, and we're now in
the process of merging with a much bigger company. They currently have _no_
IT department though. Most of the employees don't have work computers, just
stacks of printed paper and hand-dialing phone leads. No, they're not
shameless telemarketers, they're professional matchmakers. Part of my new
job responsibilities will be configuring their new phone dialer system, and
setting up a network for them (sadly, MS based, as the new phone dialer
software only runs on Windows. I stressed the benefits of rolling out
Ubuntu, but if the company's going to be restructured around that dialer
software, I'm going to have to accept it). The good thing though is that our
CEO will take the CTO position after the merge, effectively doubling our
tech department, and we'll be hiring a few other people to take over tech
support and Q/A, and possibly adding a couple more developers. This is going
to be an interesting journey for us, and these guys seem like good people to
work with. The only downside is the 33 mile commute, each way.

So, that's what's been going on from my end. I even managed to squeeze in a
few Ubuntu and Edubuntu installations for some friends and family, with 3
more waiting until Gutsy is officially released. Time for me to get back to
work. See you at the installfest!
