I have successfully edited xorg.conf, restarted  & resized my desktop to 
utilize all of my monitor's screen.

Also I installed, from Synaptic, all the font listings which looked 
promising; if I need more, i'll try the URL
suggested by Mike --- no, truth is I'll go there momontarily and have a 
good look about, even if I don't use
anything from there right away.
