Hey Mat,

Beryl and Compiz have now merged into a new project called
compiz-fusion. The latest version of Ubuntu, Gutsy Gibbon 7.10, will
enable compiz-fusion by default if your hardware supports it. If it
is not on and you are using 7.10, you can try to enable it in the
"system -> preferences -> appearance -> effects" dialog. Let us know
if that's not working and tell us what errors you get.

As for buying a new computer with Ubuntu, you should check out
http://www.dell.com/ubuntu and http://www.system76.com . I suspect
most new system should be able to run compiz-fusion, especially if
they are using an nvidia card, but I do not own any of them so I
cannot recommend any particular system. Feel free to browse through
their offerings, pick one you like, and then ask the list for feedback
on your choice.

Also, I approved your mail manually but only users who subscribe to
the list can post to the list. This is to prevent spam. Please be
sure to subscribe at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-ma before you
reply or make future postings.

Best,
Jason
