Launching Ubuntu from USB Thumb Drives

I finally figured out a fix for my boot errors when attempting to boot from
a thumb drive (with Ubuntu or other distros.)

Basically, the newer BIOS includes a boot option labeled "USB Mass Storage
Emulation Type." The default in my newer systems was "Auto." In one older
system, where I could boot from the thumb drive without error, the default
was "USB HDD".

After dropping into the System Setup Utility (via F2 at boot time), I went
into the "Boot" menu and changed the "USB Mass Storage Emulation Type"
option to "All Fixed Disc" from "Auto" - and the system now boots fine from
the thumb drive.

Hoping this might save someone else a bit of time in the future,
