Older Linksys WRT-54G routers are great as repeaters. I used a pair to
bridge different areas of my house. The benifit of the older routers is that
they have more memory for larger firmwares. The DD-WRT firmware is a linux
firmware that greatly enhance the features provided by this router. This
also includes mesh networks and boosted transmit power. I saw on-line the
other day plans to build a parabolic antenna which performs very well. It
only costs a few bucks to make. Other, less crafty, options are to buy high
gain antenas or  pre-built Cantenas.
