[ubuntu-us-mn] XDMCP configuration

Ahh . very cool. Ok, that worked . for the most part. I tried starting a
'gnome-session' and it the GUI displayed upside down and backward - then it
kept going into screensaver mode and wouldn't take my password. But, I can
work through all that. The important thing is that I did connect and the
gnome apps I tried did work.
Thanks for the help!
Dan

when you connect, use this command:
ssh -Y <host>

I guess the answer is that I didn't know that I could. I've tried googling
and I come up with adding the following to my sshd config:
X11Forwarding yes
But, every time I try anything graphical I get a "Cannot open display" or
"no display specified" error, so I seem to be missing a step or two?
Thanks,
Dan

Is there a particular reason that you want remote desktop as opposed to
tunneling X apps through an ssh session?

I see that XDMCP is not secure. I was looking for a ssh base solution.
Perhaps this will work: VNC.
The target system needs to be configured to accept remote control. This can
be done via System|Preferences|Remote Desktop Preferences. The default is
not to allow remote access. On Sharing section, allow others to view and/or
control the desktop. On Security there are some options that apply. For
example, confirmation could be set on, but that would not be appropriate if
the target system was unattended. Or a password can be required to access
the system remotely.
When the Remote Desktop Preferences is set, the system can be accessed via
Applications|Internet|Remote Desktop Viewer.
I was able to connect between my laptop and server, but there were issues
seeing the refreshed screen. I am not sure if it was that one machine was
run gnome and the other was running kde. There appears to be remote
control. But the results of the remote requests are not seen by the remote
machine. Perhaps this due to the router settings. Anyway, good luck with
this.

Glenn

I'm wondering if anyone uses XDMCP successfully with Ubuntu 9.04? I would
like to be able to remotely log into my server via my laptop at home through
a gnome session. I had this functioning in the past (back when I was on
8.04) but at some time I stopped being able to use this access - or rather,
when I try to remotely log in, the server isn't found.
To enable, I've gone into System->Administration->Login and enabled remote
login. This was all I needed to do before and all of the documentation I've
found on searches only discusses this screen. I have no problems accessing
Samba or connecting with SSH. Both laptop and server are running the same
version of Ubuntu (9.04).
Does anyone know what else I might look at?
Thanks,
Dan
