[ubuntu-us-mn] Weird keyboard input failure

My Ubuntu 14.04 system has started exhibiting a weird symptom that
that makes it almost unuseable.
When I boot up I use the keyboard to enter my password to log in but
after that no keyboard inout is recognized. The mouse works, programs
work until keyboard input is needed. I'm able to run the Onboard screen
keyboard facility but keyboard input from it is not recognized.
Rebooting does not help. I can go to the guest account and the keyboard
works. Or I can go to my account, enter my password to get into Ubuntu
from the keyboard but then no keyboard input.
BTW I have not been able to get to my files from the guest account.
I've tried:
sudo -ufholson bash
and get the error message:
sudo: unable to change to root gid: Operation not permitted
What I've done lately that may be related (tho does not seem likely) :
I've been using Hibernate and it works (comes out of) but sometimes fails
giving a screen of error messages and hanging. If I hold the on/off switch
down it will shut down and I can reboot and it says a
system program problem has occured and offers to report it.
Now with the keyboard problem when I reboot (or switch users to my regular
account) it also says system program problem has occured. I can not report
it because that requires me to enter my password.
The other thing I've done today shortly before the keyboard symptom appeared
was that I set an 92kB image as wallpaper.
Any idea what the problem is or how to explore or fix it?
Fred
