To me, the problem started right in the beginning.
Back in the day Free software was no-cost software and no one bothered
to define Freedom and cost as relating to the software.
the no cost side of free became a problem a little at a time as some of
the communities most talented coders had to drop Free Software to earn a
living for their families.
By the time everyone realized the developers had to cover their expenses
to keep pumping out no-cost software the Free Software Foundation was
sort of locked into the name.
Imagine how easy it would have been to change the name to Software
Freedom Foundation.
