I'm Michael Head, a graduate student at SUNY Binghamton. I live in
downtown Binghamton and have been using Ubuntu since a bit after the
4.10 release. Previously, I had used Debian (mostly unstable) for about
5 years... Ubuntu was comfortable to an experienced Debian user, and
eliminated a lot of configuration pain by including all the 3rd party
drivers in the kernel package. Plus Debian took too long a time to
assimilate new GNOME releases.

I'm a member of the local STNYLUG mailing list, but haven't yet gone to
a meeting, though I plan to go to the next one (fourth Wednesday of each
month at the new SUNY-B downtown building), since it's being held a few
blocks from my apartment.
