1) Wubi exists, but I much prefer to recommend to people to do a dual
boot. If the user has Vista the Windows partition can be shrunk using
Windows tool, if they have XP they should use the built-in partion tool
that comes with the Ubuntu installer. In all cases Grub will be used as
the boot loader and it will recognize and boot the Windows partition. It
is by far easier to install Windows first in a properly sized partition
and then install Linux, but the post install partitioning is not that
hard. As with all OS surgeries a proper backup should be done to ensure
that data can be recovered.
2. Yes, you can use VirtualBox or VMWareServer on Windows to run Linux.
VirtualPC 2007 has issues with Linux.
3. The difficulty of learning FLOSS software depends on the difficulty
of the application; simple email, web browsing and office work can be
done out-of-the box with Ubuntu.
If the person is in Rochester I am sure we can assist them at one of our
next meetings or perhaps at a RCSI meeting.
