I've used Nagios and liked that it is pretty simple to do the basic
monitoring but would allow you to scale with more intense monitoring rules
if you wanted. There is also a pretty healthy plugin ecosystem which was a
time-saver for the limited amount of monitoring I wanted to do.
I had some trouble with it where if I set the checks too close together it
started thinking everything was down. Didn't spend much time troubleshooting
that one.
I've heard that this Nagios fork: https://www.icinga.org/ provides a better
UI. They split about a year and half ago and haven't followed too closely
the developments since.
