Gnome Desktop Issues

Hello all.

I am running Hoary, and my Gnome desktop doesn't seem to want to
refresh after I make a change.  If I change the background, sometimes
it will change, but often it the dialog will indicate that it has
changed, but the Gnome background will be the same until I log out and
log back in.  Sometimes that same thing happens when I make a file on
the desktop, although right now as I try it, it seems to be working. 
Also, when I take a screenshot and save it on the desktop, it will not
show up until the next time I login.  The screenshot issue applies
even when the other things are working properly.

What makes it so baffling is that it works sometimes, and others it
doesn't.  Anybody else experiencing this issue?  Anyone know how to
fix it?
