Synaptic = HELP !

I hope a Ubuntu developper can help me here ! :-/

Gnumeric 1.4.0 has just been released a few days ago.

Some very kind gentleman informed me that on this ftp site :
ftp://ftp.ubuntulinux.org:/ubuntu/pool/main

there are already .deb packages for it. this is obviously a Ubuntu
site, so I thought, how comes that this new version doesn't show when I
click on the "reload/refresh" button in Synaptic ??

So, I made a (very pathetic) atttempt at adding this address into
sources.list, which (obviously) failed miserably : it says that it
failed to downaload the index file or something along that line.

So I just pulled all the packages (ie, it still needed many
dependencies) using gFTP.

But I am running into a WEIRD problem. Basically there are two packages
for gnumeric, the 'main' package and the 'common' package.

Well, if I try installing one of them by hand, using the 'dpkg -i'
command (the only command I know really !! :-/ ), it tells me that
'common' must be installed first. Fair enough. But when I do that, then
'common' tells me that the other package must be installed first ! See ?
There is no solution ! Same for libgtk2.0. It needs libgtk-common. if I
try to install one, it complains that the other one needs installing,
and vice versa !! :o((((

Please heeeeeelp. :o(

So, thank you Ubuntu devs for packaging it SO fast, but could you please
give me the user manual to actually get Synaptic to take this server
into consideration and look after these dependency weirdness for
me ! :-/

Regards,

Vince
