If you enable the Multiverse repository in Synaptic (or apt-get or
aptitude), you can install the Microsoft core fonts. The package is
called "msttcorefonts" and these fonts are included:

  Andale Mono
  Arial Black
  Arial (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Comic Sans MS (Bold)
Courier New (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Georgia (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Impact
Times New Roman (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Trebuchet (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Verdana (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
  Webdings

Microsoft also uses Tahoma quite often and I *thought* that was part
of this package, but apparently not.

I'll also note however that I'm a graphic designer and typography nut
and the defaults fonts in Ubuntu are in no way inferior to
Microsoft's. I WOULD recommend turning on subpixel hinting though.
There may be a howto for that in the wiki. If not, let me know and
I'll figure out how I did it again. :)

Hope that helps!
