how to login gnome as root

Have you allowed Gnome to do so? I can tell it in spanish, which is the
language i've set my ubuntu, but I'll try to translate into english
{though menu entries may vary the name}: System>System
Configuration>Access Screen Configuration>Security
Then mark Allow root to login in GDM
