Ubuntu Users, Greetings!

  ...I'd like to (politely) pick your brains.

  Not too long ago, I installed Ubuntu on a spare partition on my
  computer. Having been so impressed by Ubuntu -- which came with
  full support the array of odd devices on my laptop (you all know
  how difficult getting things to work on a laptop is) -- I
  permenantly removed MicrobeSnot(TM) Windows XP which I had
  temporarily been bound to (new, unsupported hardware, remember ;)

  <praise class="prior to brain-picking">
    o Ubuntu is an *awesome* distribution to the fullest meaning
       that "awesome" will permit; I hope that some of our Ubuntu
       are reading this message I would like to forward you my
       deepest and most sincere thanks.
    o A non KDE-based distribution is honestly quite refreshing.
    o  It's Debian (made-easy) baby!!!  ...no more odd-ball,
       non-standard, non-supported Debian installation iso's
       for installing lvm, reiserfs, jfs...
  </praise>

  Partition scheme on my HD (dimensions do not accurately
  represent partition sizes):

  +-------+------+---------+-----------------------+
  |       |      |         |+------------+--------+|
  | /boot | swap |    /    || /win_data  | /data  ||
  |       |      |         |+------------+--------+|
  +-------+------+---------+-------------+---------+

  /dev/hda1:  /boot   ext2
  /dev/hda2:  <swap>
  /dev/hda3:  /       reiserfs
  /dev/hda4:  <extended>
    /dev/hda5: /win_data  vfat
    /dev/hda6: /data      ext2

  My problem:

  I installed an smp kernel via Syna.. the package installer.
  This worked nicely, so I decided to make it the default
  kernel on bootup.
  I edited the /boot/grub/menu.lst, ran "grub-update"
  (I believe) and ended up with a broken grub config.

  To remedy this I tried:
  Installing Ubuntu to /dev/hda5, and then re-installing
  grub; this failed.
  I repeated this step and also re-installed /boot;
  again it failed.

  I am completely unable to recover my previous setup
  where /dev/hda3 is "/" on reiserfs. Please help guide
  me recover this setup. I have tried everything within
  the limits of my knowledge and have been left dumb-founded.

  To the friendly and helpful Ubuntu community, many thanks
  in advance.
