Apparently some versions of GDM allow this. I have an installation of
Libranet 2.8.1 with gdm2 installed. This has a file
/etc/gdm/factory-gdm.conf which shows:
# A comma separated list of users that will be logged in without having
# to authenticate on local screens (not over xdmcp). Note that 'root'
# is ignored and will always have to authenticate.
LocalNoPasswordUsers=
This feature does not work in the version of GDM in Hoary, however.
