This is probably to do with the native TeX fonts getting rendered as
bitmaps;  so they come out quite nice at 300dpi on your laserprinter but are
ugly on screen and cause huge files.

If you use 'pdflatex' and then LaTeX package 'psfonts' you'll get lovely PDF
files with nice looking fonts and are also tiny.

There are also some autotraced PostScript Font versions of the classic TeX
fonts and these are known to produce good results too.
