When my pupils don't know that their pocket calculators can handle
fractions I teach them. It is something you can read in the
instructions, but reading instructions is so boring... It takes a minute
for me and for them, and, well, they become teachers, as they show their
friends how to use those previously obscure feature of their devices.
When my mother yells 'Hey, the microwave oven is broken. Sure it's you
who has been touching it', I sigh and tell her that she can control the
intensity of the device by spinning this or that control wheel. She
never think again it's broken, she just adjust it.
Computers are much more complicated than a pocket calculator or a
microwave oven, and instructions are much a burden if you want to use it
for the first time. Maybe they should just work fine at a first time,
and, step by step, with the help of a friend or a technician or a list
like this or whatever, you can dive into its configuration to not
needing a help ever more and become a teacher.
