No sound ( for one particular login )

No, it wasn't, and adding the user fixed it. It also alerted me to
fixing up group membership in general for that user, which fixed a slew
of other problems. Much improved now, so thank you.

On my new Warty installation, I don't have the .firefox dir. I think all
firefox stuff is now in ~/.mozilla/firefox. ~/.phoenix goes back to
before the phoenix->firefox name change. I suspect you can get rid
of .firefox and .phoenix. Try renaming them temporarily and delete if no
problems occur.

The dirs that seem to give me problems are ~/.gnome*,  ~/.dmrc,
~/.esd_auth. When I leave them intact between installations, they (not
sure exactly which from them) sometimes seem to badly stuff up the gnome
desktop. I now just delete them all and start afresh with my gnome
settings.
