Kernel compile issues

I have rolled a few new kernels and am having a strange issue where Hal
will mount a device but won't display the icon on the desktop nor can i
access the media but If I use the stock ubuntu kernel Hal works just
fine... Anyone with any ideas as to maybe why this is happening ONLY
with hand rolled kernels, did I forget something in the .config file or
do I need to alert some other part of my system that a new kernel is in
place...

Any help would be greatly appreciated
