Compiling kernel: Kernel panic...

I have the same issue, I have built my kernels exactly as specified here
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/KernelHowto using make-kpkg etc. I have
even used the config file from one of the Ubuntu kernels and just
stripped out PCI hotplugging and hw_random and BIOS Plug and play as
well as a few others. Ext3 is compiled in as is Ext2 and RAID/LVM and
yet my kernels fail on boot with a cannot find root device message
exactly the same as the others guys in this thread are getting.
