Synaptic any better than Windows ?

Thank you for this advice. I tried it, but there seems to be a problem
because now I'm not able to boot to Ubuntu... OK, I'm just kidding ;-)

This really is an easy-to-understand explanation, thanks. I'll save it
for future reference :-) This apt system seems so central and important
in Ubuntu (and Debian) that maybe I'll try to learn more about it. I
have bookmarked many links to Linux and Debian resources that people
have sent to this list and I think I'm going have a closer look at them.
I'm just afraid that to get a good understanding in one area, you have
to get familiar with a couple of others too. And to understand these
other areas you again have to know a couple of others. And to undrstand
these other areas you have to... well, I could go on and on :-)
