Speedtouch

"My continuing battle with my speedtouch modem: the only thing stopping me fully enjoying Ubuntu."

I have recently done a full clean install of Ubuntu with the official release ... very nice!! I had downloaded the package 'Speedtouch' from universe and the firmware and installed these on my clean new system straight away. I followed the insructions in the installed 'readme.debian' to the letter..... and nothing.

I am just getting a little frustrated now. Really this is all a user should have to do get their modem working. So could somebody please help me.

1 - How do I find out what is not working. The modem lights are flashing on reboot meaning the firmware has worked. So it must be something after that however it doesn't tell me where it stumbles and I can't find a way to get it to display the process in a terminal.

2. - Why is it so difficult for Linux to use the modem? Even when we have the released firmware!

Is it possible to get ubuntu to recognise the modem on installation (or subsequently) and just ask for the firmware?

I absolutely love what you have done with Ubuntu and use it as my sole distro now. I have only just started using Linux and it is really exciting being apart of something so new, exciting and well organised. And so it is a great shame that something so seemingly simple is annoying me so much.

I hope we can find a solution soon.

Yours sincerely

Matthew Laver
