Can't play audio CDs

Hi:

I have several problems playing CDs on my machine using ubuntu. It
worked fine using RH9. The first problem is that the CD player starts
up with the message "Drive Error". This seems to be because /dev/cdrom
is a link pointing to /dev/hdc and /dev/hdc has permissions: brw-rw----.
I can temporarily fix this by setting the permissions, but they return
when the machine reboots.

The second problem is that sound isn't totally working. When I login, I
hear the drumbeat sound, so sound must be somewhat functional, but that
is the only sound event I can find. The speaker icon won't allow
adjustment of the sound level. When you move the slider, it always
returns to the bottom when you release it. In addition, /dev/sndstat
contains:

nautique:/home/lpz# cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.4 emulation code)

I saw one post that said that I sould try

alias snd-card-0 i810_audio
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio

instead of

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0

in /etc/modprobe.d/sound, but that didn't help. I
executed /usr/share/alsa-base/snddevices, which created some device
files, but that didn't help either.

When I run the CD player, it doesn't produce any sound output.
