as far as I know, you HAVE to overwrite the MBR. Again, as far as I 
know, there is only one mbr on the drive, not one for each partition. 
The mbr is where boot instructions go, basically, so the grub or lilo 
boot loader gets installed into the MBR and points it to the linux root 
or boot partition, depending on what your setup is, and to the Windows 
partition, allowing you to select which you want.
