Well, reformatting as HFS+ and then as HFS fixed the problem, as far as
I can see. At some point, something subtle must have gone wrong on the
disk (Disk First Aid found nothing). May well not be Ubuntu's fault;
I've mounted that partition under Gentoo and Yellow Dog as well, so
Ubuntu's check mechanism might just be stricter.
