A comment and some questions.

Well it just takes a bit of digging around to find out how things work
in Linux.

Anyway, in response to Kevin Mulligan's "How to end broken programs"
accidental question, you could employ the System Monitor tool as a
GUI-friendly 'kill' command.

Go to
Applications > System Tools > System Monitor

Click on the "Process Listing" tab at the top, highlight the process
you want to end
and click the "End Process" button at the bottom right.

Tadah! Process should be killed. Be careful though, don't kill the
wrong thing. :)
