Minimum disk space requirements?

My experiance installing Ubuntu on a 2.1 GB drive was the standard
install would not work, it would fail complaining about the lack of
disk space. I was successful when during boot I selected the expert
install. I accected all of the installer suggestions but the one where
it asked if I wanted to copy the remaining packages to the hard disk.
I would not do that. This time the install worked!
