video performance improvement?

What player are you using? A much as I'm a fan of the *idea* of
gstreamer I find it's much less "optimal" at this point then xine. If
you haven't switched to totem-xine I'd suggest that as a first step.

If this only happens when playing DVDs and not when playing a file off
the hard drive, check your dvd dma settings by running hdparm -d
/dev/cdrom
