two network cards

I've installed a second network interface card.  First I tried one based
on 8139too (if memory serves) and then a 3com.  Both were detected,
visible in lspci, but ifconfig doesn't show the second one at all, and
the network config utility doesn't show it either.

I know it's possible to have two NICs in Ubuntu (warty) - so what's the
trick?  I must be missing something obvious.
