uninstalling gnome-desktop?

are you sure you mean gnome-desktop ? i think its called ubuntu-desktop
which is a metapackage that can safely get uninstalled unless you
upgrade to the next stable release....where it would be clever to have
it again to make sure all dependencys get upgraded through it...
