Did someone succeed in installing an Agfa Snapscan e50

THAT problem may be with xsane or a package it is dependent upon...
you may need to look for a bug report about that one. Alternatively
you could get the package quiteinsane (from universe) -- it is a
different "front end" and may work better on your system.

You are all set because there is no "scanner" module necessary. From
what you have written you have everything you need for SANE.

I have found SANE to be very tempermental to set up but once I find
the trick for your particular scanner or port it usually scans just
fine.

I have more experience with SCSI so I can't advise you specifically on
what to do for a USB port, but my advice would be to look again at the
sane-usb man page and try adding the appropriate line to the
appropriate "backend" file in /etc/sane.d  --- whichever one of the
.conf files refers to your scanner.

You may also need to make sure you have added your user to the
appropriate group, and make sure the usb device has privileges for
reading and writing in the same group.
