[hoary] can't upgrade to hoary

Sadly, the machine is unusable now :-p. As far as I can tell it's a 
problem with the X server since it looks fine until it displays the 
login screen, at which point I get an unreadable, jumping, flickering 
mess in the correct colors for the login screen. I thought at first it 
was a refresh rate problem of some kind, but the GNOME cursor looks 
fine anywhere on the screen. Anyone have any ideas? This is a Powerbook 
G4 DVI 667MHz.
