I've only used Ubuntu as a DHCP client as well. My DHCP server is a
Slackware box which I've never had any other issues with in other
OS's. In fact, that server has been up longer than I've been using
Ubuntu - and it's still working fine with several Windows boxes
connected.

(hey, I've never done that. it DOES make one feel kinda proud) :-)

Not sure about this one. There's no file or directory there on my
Slackware system. My big problem here is that my business partner has
always insisted we both use Slackware on our home servers. We use them
for development and until now he's always done all the administration
on them. To be fair, I'm sure it IS easier to only deal with one OS on
two machines doing the same tasks. Unfortunately he got married a few
months ago and hasn't been as available as he has in the past. (I sent
this question to him two weeks ago and haven't received a reply yet).
Some of you may also know that the Slackware community isn't very
helpful compared to Ubuntu's - so I've never been able to get much
info out of them.

Because this is only happening on Ubuntu machines, I decided it would
be safe to ask the list here. :-)

FWIW, this is the only dhcp related process I see running in Ubuntu (ps ax):

dhclient3 -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf /var/run/dhclient.eth0.leases eth0
