you should rather run "make dep" but a cleaner way would be the
command( XXX for i.e. 686) :

sudo make-kpkg --revision 2.6.8.1-16 --append_to_version -3-XXX --initrd
binary

which will create a debian kernel package for you and:

cd ..
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
will install it then.....
