Games : 'FlightGear' hangs ! :o(

I am not really into games at all, but I like flight simulators. 
I was very happy to see Flightgear in Synpatic, so I spendt 3 hours
downloading 80MB (don't have broadband)
the game starts, but it only goes as far as displaying a kind of
"splash" ( a pic of a plane, as you would expect ;o) in the middle of
the screen, then starts to play some sounds, then it stops there, the
sound / "music" sounds crap, and the game hangs, I must kill the
process. 

Does anyone have a similar problem ? 

Could it be because of my Video card ? I have an old ATI 128 Rage Pro,
and I don't assume that Ubuntu put 3D drivers for it, although I don't
even know how to check this particular point ! 

What could be wrong ?? :o(
