Xinerama and gnome on Thinkpad T40

I'm trying unsuccesfully to get xinerama working as well, using
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO/ as a guide.. 
I'm not sure if it's because the HOWTO is geared towards multiple
videocards or soemthing else, but when I run X I just get my single
laptop monitor without even gnome. 

Below is my XF86Config-4 - it is based off the initial ubuntu install
configuration file, with an additional monitor, screen and layout..
I've commented my additions.

I'm a relative newbie, so it's possible I've messed something else up,
but I'm not sure what to pursue next... any help/comments very much
appreciated...
