I'd almost go as far as saying that building it without smb support is a
usability bug, rather than a feature request. The feature is there, it
just needs to specify the smb library as a build dependency.

All you actually have to do to get a gnome-cups-manager with smb support
is install the libsmbclient-dev package and rebuild the gnome-cups-manager
package, it will detect the library and automatically build in support. Ok
this isn't a simple user task, but it suggests that unless there was a
good reason for excluding smb support (e.g. some dependency nightmare),
this is an oversight. imho.
