Indeed - as your commands show, you have a 3c940 network card, which
does not appear to be recognised by your kernel. Therefore, none of the
network setup commands can work.

I guess they ship with a larger selection of network card drivers in
their kernel ...
I can't find this card mentioned on the wiki
(http://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport) , nor on Bugzilla.
You have a couple of options, as far as I can tell ... replace the card
with a supported one, or build a kernel module from source. Neither are
particularly difficult, but both are non-obvious.
Things I don't know at the moment - what network drivers are present in
the default kernel (I'm currently not on Ubuntu, so it's not easy to
check), and whether the 3c940 driver is present in the source (I'm 90+%
sure it is).
